Worked example / not a client case study

Worked example: a centrifugal lineup running below its efficient range

Consider a large centrifugal plant with demand below the selected machine lineup's efficient operating range. This example shows what an assessment would investigate; it does not report a completed engagement.

The operating question

Is excess air being vented while multiple machines remain online? A compressor can have strong rated efficiency and still consume unnecessary power when its operating range does not match the plant's demand.

What to measure

Log true input power, delivered flow, header pressure, control states, and blow-off behavior together across representative shifts. Record the machine configuration and inlet conditions so the baseline can be compared fairly.

Changes to evaluate

Compare lineup, sequencing, and pressure-band changes while maintaining surge protection and required pressure. Estimate the value of each change from the measured load profile and the facility's tariff before considering new equipment.

How an outcome would be established

Repeat the measurements after an approved change and compare equivalent demand and production conditions. Report measured kWh changes separately from annualized savings, document operating-hour assumptions, and calculate payback only once implementation costs are known.

This is an educational scenario, not evidence of a completed client engagement or guaranteed savings. Facility recommendations require measured data and documented assumptions.
